View Full Version : fishing gadgets/gismos
A few fishing related gadgets or potential ones have been mentioned lately. I'm an unashamed purchaser of some of them. A few actually work. Have you ever found one that surprised you? Had doubts but found them useful? (I'll admit to the fact I have used and caught some nice fish on the Flying Lure!!) The best surprise I think I have is a lure retrever called "fish on",.very different than any of the others I'm aware of. Has gotten nearly all my lures back,..a few exceptions because the way it works is that it gos down and grabs the eye of the lure,..a few very old one were pulled out, from the body ..and something like a slip sinker will of course thwart it,...but in my opinion a winner,..(I don't see them offered anymore,)...Any favorite gismos that you will admit to?

Cabela's used to sell a (blue) device that slipped over your rod's handle above the reel, and had a tension-adjustable release that held your line.
When still-fishing, you:
1) put your bait out
2) with your spinning reel's bail open, placed the line above the spinning reel in the release
3) kept an eye on the line to see that it was still in the release
4) when the line slipped free of the release, you put your jigging-crankbait-whatever rod down, and concentrated on the deadstick
When a fish took the bait (a slip sinker & circle hook or floating jig head are part of the formula), it was free to run with the bait. This device, which I fondly call a "gizmo" (original, huh), works particularly well in gale-force wind.
I have two of these gizmos left, and would buy another half dozen, if I knew where to find them??

Cehck with Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops. Was flipping through the catalogs a few days ago and I saw the exact product your talking about except it was red not blue.

I have used a home grown version of a quick strike release for many years, and the best part is it is very effective & cheap.
Try a O-ring slipped onto the front of the fore grip of the spinning reel with the line tucked under it slightly. When you get a strike with the bail open it spools freely without spooking the fish.
Add a 1" by 1"by 1/4" piece of white Styrofoam with a razor slit just deep enough in it's side to slip the line into and place it on the rod tip or between the first and second guide of the rod as a run indicator for night fishing and you will not miss a strike. You can place it at the rod tip if that is more convenient or if you want to watch it swim off, whatever works best for you.
Mono or super braid slides well through the Styrofoam so if you opt for the placement of the indicator between the first and second guide the line will slip at a controlled rate under the weight of the fish and you will not have a 100 yards of line unnecessarily laying out in the water. A quick pull or hook set will extract the marker when it is no longer needed, now just reel it up to the rod tip as the line will slip through it without any problems.
This trick works very well on a dead stick rig off shore, a boat, or on the ice the O-ring can double as a hook holder for a jig or hook.
