Midwest anglers...
I'm a 20 year old college student heading to Lake of the Woods for the first time in late may/early June. I'm looking for any tips you might have as to where to fish...I'm going to be at Sioux Narrows, whitefish bay. We are planning on fishing 'eyes and for smallmouth too. Any suggestions as to specific spots? Your information would be kindly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

LOTW is a huge lake! The first thing you will want is a map of the area where you are at. If I remember correctly there are 4 seperate maps of the lake. There are 14,000 islands out there, it can get pretty confusing. The last time I was there I made it a point to mark my map as I went along. As far as the things to bring; Jigs, Jigs, Jigs for walleye; White/Yellow spinnerbaits crashed on vertical rock walls worked for me; Live bait for Northern, that can get expensive. Good Luck. Wylie

Lake of the Woods, ahhh a walleye fisherman's dream. I have fished the lake many times and one of my favorite spots is off of Arenson Point called 12 mile reef and then alittle father out is 24 mile reef. Both of these spots have over the years produced fish that dreams are made of . You have picked on of the best fishing waters in the country to go to I am sure you will enjoy the experince and will never forget the trip. Good Luck

Just south of Souix Narrows is a place called Snake Bay. You can get there from the Narrows by boat or there are some boat ramps at resorts near the opening to Snake. I know because we got stormed out and had to get a ride back to get the trailor and truck once. Anyway this is a great early walley spot. Later in the year, points off islands etc are good. 24 mile would be somewhat out of reach from the Narrows. Its a big Lake. Bring a map, GPS, field glasses, etc. Dont get lost.
Good luck

I used to go there on a yearly basis during that time. Start tying spinner rigs. We used minnows, leeches and crawlers with 4 ft snells with hammered gold #3 indiana blades. Fish shorelines at 6-13 ft depths. Look for indentations in the shoreline where there is shallow, warmer water, baitfish will be nearby. I always buy my bait at the small shop on the right side of the road as you enter Sioux Narrows, they will give you plenty of bait for the money. We fished Long Bay and Yellow Girl bay quite a bit. Look for fish around the river outlets. You will have a great time its a beautiful place.
