The wife and I will be heading to the Rainy River this spring for the first time. I was wondering when is the best time to fish there for walleyes before the April 15th closing or the opening in the 2nd week in may? Is it safe for boats in early april? any help would be nice thanks..

The best thing to do is call Lucky Bait (1-218-634-2869) or Cleminson Resort (218-634-2257) or Royal Dutchnman Motel #? to find out the water conditions. If you go after the Big Fork River breaks loose, the water is muddy and a lot of debris is floating down river. If they open the dam at International Falls the current is very fast and harder to catch fish. The best thing to do is if you find out they are biting and the conditions are good, go as soon as possible.
P.S. Its best to find rooms before you leave because they get booked up fast. If you have any questions and cant find a place to stay, E-mail me. I might be able to help you out... I have a cabin 20 miles south of Baudette and 18 miles north of Upper Red Lake.
