I watched Tony Dean Outdoors yesterday. He had a segment on Lake Oahe Walleyes with the bag limit of 14 walleyes/day. Anyone have any experience with Oahe. I'm thinking of taking the family this summer. I've been blown off of erie so many times that I can't even count anymore and would not like to expose the kids to that kind of rough water. I'm thinking that Oahe would always have some fishable water somewhere....Any other species worth targeting? I would like to get the kids and wife on some fish....but yet have some "touristy" things to do with them as well....

Oh boy ! lots to do. Only a 4hour drive from the Blackhills and way too much stuff to tell about there! You could head south and there's Murdo (has antique auto museum)But I'd guess you would not run out of stuff to do at the Lake. Prefer "Whitlock area" myself, but spend more time on Lower Lake Sharpe (next dam downstream). Email me if there is anything that I can help with.

Love those quotes everyone puts here: "When you are travelling and come to a fork in the road, take it"

Lake Oahe can get very rough if the wind is blowing and it blows often in South Dakota. Be sure to alot enough days to weather out a day or two of windy conditions. Have enjoyed Lake Oahe for many years and would recommend it. I prefer the Whitlock area although I have fished much of the river. Walleyes is the spcies of fish I am after but have caught some nice small mouth bass. Remember its a river watch out for dead heads.

Good fishing.

Glad to hear you want to come fish Lake Oahe. Lots of small walleye but still enough big fish to make it worth the trip. The only difference between Erie and Oahe when the wind blows is the waves are closer together on Oahe, and believe me the wind does blow up here, but what is nice is that there are hundreds of lakes full of nice walleye, jumbo perch, smallmouth and largemouth bass and tons of northerns. If you are set on Oahe I would suggest the Pierre area. You can catch nice fish above and below the dam, there are also many campgrounds as well as hotel/motels that cater to fishermen. I would also suggest the glacial lakes area of northeastern South Dakota. You will find the fishing some of the best in the state with Waubay being the top lake for walleye, pike and perch. You will only be a three hour drive to Oahe. Make sure you read the fishing handbook as there are different regulations on most of the lakes. As an ex-buckeye I do miss fishing Erie but the fishing and hunting here is truely unbelieveable. If you would like more information feel free to e-mail me.
