Well that depends on the body of water that I am fishing, but for me I guess I find myself using a coontail Mepps alot!

That's a tough question, there are so many that work well at different times of the year, but anyway here goes
Far and away the most fun= a surface popper on a flyrod
Numbers and quality on spinning rod= Heddon POP-R
Big fish= 4 inch tube Texas rigged
This list could really go on and on as my favorite bait is what ever works best on a particular day, The ones I listed above I consider a good starting point.

One of my favorites is the saftey pin type spinner using a 1/32-1/16th ounce jig head with a 2 inch white twister tail. this will also catch anything else that swims, the safety pin spinner is just a very small version of the standard spinnerbait.

My favorites go with a sob story. My two top smallmouth lures are the old ABU Reflex 1/4 oz spinner and the Billy Westmorland Bass Magnet. Naturally, both are out of production. I still have a fair number of Bass Magnets. I scrambled this year being down to two ABUs and finally found a guy in Sweden willing to sell me some through E-bay.
Beyond that, #2&3 Mepps and #2&3 Vibrax, with or without tails; Rapala Husky jerks in the smaller sizes.
I haven't done it, but I fished with a guy who hauled in huge smallies one after the other on a Spittin' Image - He outfished me no matter what topwater I used and his fish were bigger. I will try that this spring in Ontario.

For crankbaits I use the Rapala suspending shadrap in crawfish color. For soft bait I use a Gamakatsu football jighead with a brown/orange Chompers spider grub. These work equally well in the Missouri River System or in a lake.

Tight lines,

Far and away the best bass lure ,year round, with the capability to fish various technique's . I side with kevin van damm ,it doesn't matter as long as it's a spinnerbait,if you want really specific 3/8 chartruese colorado, hammered ,deep cut, silver single spin.just my choice. goodluck

My favorite is a 3'' Kalins curltail grub fished on a 1/0 jig.
Next would probably be a #8 silver shad rap.

The Spittin' Image and a Tiny Torpedo are probably my best topwater choices.

The larger size spittin' image walks the best and the smallmouth usually don't shy away from it. My favorite topwater bait, however, is the zara puppy or the super spook junior in a natural baitfish color. Last year I picked up some outstanding smallies on these and one largemouth that was a giant for as far north as I was fishing. Don't believe me? Here's the evidence:

and here's one for the fly-fishermen in the group:

my favorite is a jointed rapala. we caught smallies on them on eagle lake in ontario, we used the black/silver and the yellow/white and i think the firetiger. We caught all the fish at that time (Late May) along big rocks with a sharp edge dropoff....as soon as the lure crossed over the edge...that is when the smallies would hit it. it was alot of fun catching them that way...i dont know if that lure would be productive elsewhere but we had fun fishing for them with that method..on those rock formations..and we told other guys at the camp that time about how we did it and they tried it and caught fish too. i have had luck with the jointed rapala for pike, musky, and bass. just my 2¢.
