I am trying to locate a lake in Minnesota to take my family fishing. I would prefer lakes that are known for their larger crappies and bluegills. (pan fish).

I think the lakes Tfisher is talking about are in the Vergus Mn area--(there are over 100 loon lakes). Otherwise a good panfish lake is just about any lake in the Alexandria area. What lake is good really depends on what time of the year you are going. Crappies can be difficult to find in mid-summer on some bodies of water.

Try Lake Vermilion to be specific Black Bay on the Cook end of the lake. The lake is very much like a Canadian shield lake so all the species are there, all in good number and size. I only went there in the spring around the Minn. opener and did well especially on crappies.

I am trying new lakes in MN every year to take my 2 little boys to. Last year we were at RUSH lake in Ottertail country and did well on very nice bluegills 9"+. But they were hard to find at times. (tons of small perch and rockbass to keep the boys happy too)
This year after much research I am going to try Lake Osakis near Alexandria, it is known for great Crappies and decent Bluegills/pumpkinseeds plus good walleyes. Unfortunately we will be there the 2nd week of JULY so I expect panfishing not to be at it's peak. I am trying to get some swimming and skiing in too, and hope the water will be a little warmer.
Take a kid fishing, You'll enjoy it as much as he/she does
