Gary:

Why would anyone have been on Clear Lake today? That's the question I asked my self several times today as the wind and rain made conditions uncomfortable. We fished from about 10:00 a.m. until about 3:00 p.m. Anchored on Billy's Reef out of the wind and caught some yellow bass and a couple of walleyes. Biggest one was about 17 inches. Lost another that size at the boat. One of the guys in our group caught a 25 inch musky also. Great jumper and fighter on 6 pound test line.

Then trolled crankbaits in front of the outlet and along the north shore. The north shore was pretty rough. Caught one 13 inch walleye and one 50 inch tow-strap. Both hit a fire-tiger crankbait.

I would have stayed home today, but I had some outdoor writers from Minnesota as guests. We wanted to get some photos. Had the fish necessary for photos, but the weather was just too unpleasant and dark for decent photos.

If we get some warm, stable weather, Clear Lake could turn on big-time.

Keep the yellow bass, they are excellent in the fry pan. Put the walleyes back.

What is a yellow bass?

A yellow bass is a very prolific panfish that is abundant in Clear Lake and a few other bodies of water in the Midwest. They are great in the frying pan, and when you get on them the action is fast. They are 8-10 inches in Clear Lake, and it is good for the lake if you keep them. Small jigs are excellent for yellow bass. They will really turn on if we get a few days of warm weather. They can be caught anywhere in the lake, but the Island and Dodge's Point are two of the more popular spots. Give them a try.

Check a Dome Bait in Ventura for the best up-to-date information.

Ron....http://community.webshots.com/photo/1583567/1586837FkbFfqVFio.....Not a great photo of a yellow bass, but if you can imagine it somewhat more brassy.

Bigger than a perch, smaller than a crappie...it is a first cousin to the white bass, but in mho a great deal better eating. In our local body of water...Clear Lake, Ia., this fish has saved more fishing days than any other species. It is an absolute delight to catch on ultralite or macrolite outfits. It has a slashing bulldog fight right up to the boat. It's population is sporadic, and because it is a short lived you can't really hurt the population by harvesting and as Bob says it probably helps the population down the road.
