CJ,
Highway Bait sells the kind that you drag behind the boat. Don't know the name of it but a buddy of mine has one and it works like a dream. The thing is shaped like a torpedo and has angled fins on the back so that it spins when you pull it. it will do 90 fish at a time in about 30 minutes. They aren't real pretty when they come out though. Heads, fins and tails are all pretty near gone with all of tha scales! Sure does making cleaning perch easy on your hands!

Highway Bait is probably closed for the season now though :(

CJ,

Just to satisfy my curiosity - why a scaler? Everyone I fish with, or around, fillet - and the way we do it the skin and scales go in the garbage along with the guts and bones. Really, I'm not being judgemental, just curious.

The same with our group of guys. Once the fillet is cut, we skin it. No scales involved. It also helps the fillets from curling up when you do the frying, too.

Many folks like the taste difference when the skin is left on (crunchy). Lots of guys up at Lake Simcoe use tumbling drums to scale their perch each year. We have been kicking the idea around for years as there is a taste difference with the skin on.

After all the effort, I think that the filet route is by far best. The issue of skin on taste goes away when you administer the beer batter, shore lunch or especially the Golden Dipped Cajun... a must for perch.

I use a drum to refresh brass, I hope the same drum isn't considered here. A good glove, good knife and someone to follow your instructions on their use is all you need.

In any case, do what ya gotta do, it's your kitchen, your rules. Just enjoy.

If you really want to scale a lot of fish at one time and do it at the house when you get home from fishing, a restaurant style potato peeler is the best thing going for scaling perch, bluegill, sunfish, white perch, crappies or other panfish.
They can be found at most restaurant equiptment actions and most of the time they run around $50 to $100 bucks.
New units cost too much money...in the $500 to $700 dollar range.

They're no bigger than a pot that you'd deep fry a turkey in and all you need is a garden hose, a bucket and an electrical outlet.
Screw the hose on the water outlet on the scaler, add up to 35 pounds of perch and hit the switch. The bucket catches the scales and slime that comes out of the drain hose (good fertilizer) and depending on how many fish you put in, it only takes between 1 and 4 minutes to completely scale and rinse all the fish.

It's a little extreme but it's the neatest operation out there for scaling perch !

I've been using the Bear Paw handheld for the 20 years or more, the same unit. It's the easiest I've ever wanted.
