Traveled to the Rhinelander Wisconsin area this week to fish for muskies and smallmouth bass. Trees were just starting to turn colors, air temps. were in the low 30's at night, mid 50's to low 60's during the day. As usual, I didn't pack properly and took too many light-weight clothes and not enough heavy clothes for the morning and evening fishing. It was very windy most of the trip.
Fished muskies with Steve Huber of Rhinelander. Steve is a musky guy, he or his clients have taken 117 muskies this year. If you're looking for a first musky, or musky action, Steve has several lakes that would be good bets. He also has some lakes that might not provide as much action, but do provide the chance for a trophy.
In about six hours, we caught two muskies with Steve. Keep in mind that we had some tough fishing conditions. Had numerous follows, and also had several muskies mess with the sucker we were trailing behind the boat. The muskies would come up and look at the sucker, even open their mouths, but would just not take the sucker. That's musky fishing.
Both of our fish came on Bionic Bucktails. They would look at twitch baits and crankbaits, but when they decided to eat, it was the Bionic Bucktail they ate. Steve Huber's website is www.herefishyfishy.com
Fished smallmouth with tackle rep Mike Gottheardt. Mike fishes smallies in the Rhinelander area frequently. We wanted to fish some mid-lake bars, but the wind made boat control really tough. Fished some points and rock flats in protected areas and did well. Several bass were in the 17-19, maybe even 20 inch range. Jigs with 4 inch Power Finesse style worm in the watermelon color, or 4 inch Power Grubs were the hot set up.
These smallmouth could be fished down very quickly. I hope when the locals discover them they are responsible in their harvest. Unfortunately, it takes just a few kill-oriented anglers a short time to ruin a fishery like this.
We stayed at Holiday Acres right at the edge of Rhinelander. Very nice accomodations, good food, close to the fishing action. For more info on Holiday Acres, the number is 715-369-1500.
