Fished on the Mississippi River Monday and had very good walleye action. We were close to downtown St. Paul fishing the wingdams with guide and river-rat Ed Philpot. Ed knows the river and can read it's moods very well. Ed is an extremely interesting individual.

We caught the walleyes on the tips of the wingdams on 3/8th ounce Fire-ball jigs tipped with Power Grubs and minnows. Sometimes we used the entire Power Grub, but sometimes we broke the tail off. Colors that produced best were orange head/white body, and orange head/chartreuse body. Fish were mostly in the 2-5 pound range. Really nice looking fish.

This pool of the Mississippi in the 1960's was pretty much an open sewer. They have cleaned it up, and invoked a no-kill on most of the gamefish. This stretch of the Mississippi will provide lots of fish, and big fish. 7-10 pound walleyes are not uncommon, and are in fact, pretty abundant.

Boat ramps in the area are good.

Bob,

I have been interested in trying Pool 2. How does one get a hold of Ed Philpot for a little guide services?

Thanks,
Rick
