Hi
I need advice on a good quality rod and reel... It's a gift and I know nothing about ice fishing. Anyway, I guess the guy mostly fishes perch. Any suggest on a brand name, type, on-line retailer, etc... Thanks

You won't go wrong with a Dave Genz Lightning Rod. I would go with a medium light action if perch are the main target. Put a small Agenda reel on it and you have a very nice rig at a moderate cost. If you can find a local retailer that has one, they can provide specifics.
Good luck..

Ht blue ice noodle rod. with a ultra lite spinning reel. Myself for the reel I would go wit ha okuma ultra0lite spinning reel but you dont find thoose in most stores. Other wise I would by a abu garcia ultra rite reel. This rod will serve as a good crappie/sunnie rod also.

You could also go into Scheel's and ask Connie or anyone for a good combo

I agree on the rod, my preference for thw reel would be the mitcell spidermite. Its tough enough to land any fish, relatively inexpensive, and can be used after iceout on any ultralight rod for walleyes or any gamefish. Of course, i own about 20 or so mitchells from the classic 300 garcias to the spidermite. Did i say i like mitchell?? Tight lines...

put one in your hands and that's what you will want to fish with. and they come with great reels, including the spidermite.

Before picking a ice rod, one needs to know if your going to be fishing mainly outside in the open or in a fish-house. while in a fishhouse you will prefer a bit shorter in length rod so I would go with a medium action fast taper to ensure it loads or bends to provide power on the hook set.
Secondly a medium action is fine for overall depths you will be fishing also even though you only plan to fish perch crappies will eventually be a winter target. If you start chasing crappies you will need a rod with good back bone to hoist the fish out of the deeper water you will find them in during the winter months.
These are just some of my tips I haven't seen the new Genz rods but am sure they are a excellent choice. If price isn't a obstacle try Thorne Brothers for a cusotm made rod. it just depends how much of a purist you are. Genz Rods by Berkley are designed by some of the best ice anglers around so I am sure they will fill the ticket.

The Genz rod is an awsome choice! I personally have 3 of them. I also have a Bad Dog jiggin pole, although I don't know if they are still in buisness or not. Another great choice is any of the ice rods by the Thorne Bros. They are a little more expensive but as anyone knows you get what you pay for in most cases
