I am looking for suggestions as to where to fish this May. I am taking my son in law on a fishing trip before he and my daughter move out west. We have been to Leech Lake and Lake of the Woods before. My criteria is less than 10 hour drive from Central Iowa, be somewhere I can use my own boat, and lotsa fish !!! Somewhere with Walleye would be great but Smallmouth and Pike would be a welcome addition. Any suggestions are welcomed

10 hour drive from Central Iowa would put you somewhere between Waubay So Dak, and Devils Lake No. Dakota. as far as a all around area to fish, you cannot go wrong with northeast South Dakota, walleyes, northerns, smallmouth, perch, and bluegills, all within a 40 mile radius of Webster So Dak. Lots of smaller lakes to try, and some new water that may have never seen a boat yet. Devils lake, Walleyes, Northerns, perch, and white bass galore. Big water tho.

I would go with Winnie, Mille Lacs, or Leech. If you go to Leech or Winnie, try to head over to Red Lake for a day of chasing pike or crappies. Judd's Resort would be a good place to headquarter out of on Winnie. Pretty hard to go wrong with any of those locations that time of year.
Let us know where you decide to go and how you do.
Best Fishes.

Hi Guys Thanks for your input
I have never tried Mille Lacs, would love to do Winnie or the SD area. Have heard tall tales of lotsa big perch in NE SD too.

Any specific lakes come to mind, or a good source of local fishing information?
Thanks

Hey if you do head to Eastern SD you might want to get a hold of two guys on this board that live up there.
One goes by Eyez, the other by Don SD.
Both of these guys are excellent people as well as fishermen. Eyez lives in Watertown and spends countless days a year fishing. He really knows his stuff, and can get you on a good bite in a moments notice.

Craig, Nope, I live in Ia. LOL can't really give you very many specifics, but in general, I try to stay off of Waubay, if at all possible. There are so many lakes up there that can offer good quality fishing, regardless of what species you opt for. You could pick a different lake, and target a different species and easily fill out a full week, and never hit 1/10 of the lakes that hold fish. If you want my sugggested starting points, I would start at Bitter or Blue Dog for walleyes, Antelope for northerns, and Enemy Swim for panfish and smallmouth. If the weather was going to hold out for a couple days, go to Waubay for all species. Dont forget about reetz as a trophy lake. Be very aware that there are almost a different set of laws for each lake and you will need to know them!
Eastern Iowa to Port Clinton OH is about 7 + hours - which make it about 10 hours from central Iowa - might be worth a look - I like the Lake Erie experience
