Where I fish I have never heard of anyone handlining so I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I'm curious to all aspects of this type of fishing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

there are at least 2 hosted chats about handlining
Tom Vanderweide 5/26/99
Craig Meyer 6/24/98
also if you do a search from the walleyecentral main page, there are acouple of articles, i believe juls did one after she learned how to handline from rick lacourse and bruce deshano
hope that helps

I can tell you some of the basics. It consists of a plastic coated wire similar to a downrigger cable that is spooled to a special reel (kind of reminds me of one of those reels that you see in a garage that automatically retracts that a drop light is attached to) mounted toward the front of the boat. A rig is hooked up to it kind of like a 3 way rig with a heavy weight. What you do is begin trolling and lower the weight till you hit bottom, drag the weight holding the line in your hand (they make leather gloves that only have the index finger) and you use a pencil plug or whatever is hot at the time and pull it around. You really need to hook up with someone who does it all the time to get the feel of it. When I fish the river in the spring, the handliners just slam the fish, altough its a whole different smoke than conventional fishing.

Excellent!! Thank you! I can't wait to see the pic! That was a fun day. You and Greg did a great job. All I had to do was talk you guys through it, while I sat back and ate bagels and drank coffee. Tough job, don't you think?
But hey, you can't go around telling people I make you guys kiss the fish, or no one will want to learn from me anymore..heheh Shhhhhhhhh...;-)

Happy Holidays!
