Going to have some out of towner's to Leech Lake the first week of June that want to fish walleyes. I haven't been on the lake in about 8 years. Looking for ideas on where the fish might be. Thanks for the help!!

My favorite spot on Leech is Bear Island. There is so many different types of structure to fish. Walleyes hold around there all year long. The first part of June should still be hot. I'd launch my boat in Brevic, check out a map of the lake to see where that is. As soon as you come out of the landing take a right and head towards the island. There is a nice channel that passes through to the right of the island. There is a transition area that goes from rock to soft bottom. I've nailed the fish on that transition line. Watch your electronics for the change in bottom, then throw out the marker. Green is the color of choice on Leech. Your best bet is a green spinner, or green jig. Orange has also produced for me. If we get alot of warm weather and the weeds start to grow at a good clip, there are some nice weed beds for rigging. The weed beds run parallell to Bear Island in about 15-18 feet of water. I've picked up some nice fighters in there also. Leech is a great lake to fish. Good luck, WS.

LAST EDITED ON May-05-00 AT 01:48PM (CST)[p]Ahhhh...summer time on Leech...
I have always done, what I thought was really well, on the west side of the lake (Walker Bay, Minnesota Island, Goose Island, the Hardwood Points and the Narrows) just because I was limited by motor size to wander all the way over to the east side...what a mistake. Last year, at the recomendations of several guys here, I tried Mokey Reef, Sucker bay and around Agency Bay. Whoo Hoo, we found fish.
Mokey had to be the most fun, since there is so much structure. Get the marker bouys out and get a good understanding of the reef lines, then drift or troll up and down the drop offs and on top of the reef. The deep water to the west of the reef holds some really nice sizes.
The guy to ask is "Murph", he guides there all the time and you might want to hire him to take the group out for a day or two so that you can minimize your time/catch ratio...an idea. E-mail me if you want his information.
Good luck!

If you're way east at Bear Island, you might also look for the bar that runs diagonally to the southwest off the southwest corner of Bear Island. It can be trolled or drift fished. Also, the west side of Bear offers good trolling water -- esp. in the evening. I like Bear Island, and used to fish it almost exclusively, but have lately been staying in Walker and fishing the more popular western hot spots. It's a long boat ride from Walker Bay to Bear.
