View Full Version : W Erie reefs: April -until ????
I know that the reefs on the Western Basin of Erie are incredible mid April,(lower numbers--monster fish) but I was wondering how long the monsters stay put. When the ease of catching 10+ pound fish wains, are the same areas inhabited by larger numbers of smaller fish. I was thinking of a May, Port Clinton trip. What are your experiences?
(Are people still successfully dragging Reef Runners 80-100' feet back?)
Thanks,
Sark
we always go in the 2 nd week may for the last 10 years we have had great luck at the reefs and great luck around the islands i really think it all depends on the type of spring rick

It is my feeling that the big females will start moving off the reef area soon after the spawn is over around mid April. That is not to say that some won't be there all year long but the majority will move. Each season is different so predicting where they will be is at best a guess based on past experience. I have charted the migration movement of the western basin walleye for several years and can say that basically they move from the reefs following spawn, west toward West Sister Island then north toward Middle Sister. They may "mill around" some as storms come through but will eventually head east passing mostly to the north of the Bass Islands and Kelley's Island then on into the Middle Basin.
