I am going on a family vacation fishing the Vermillion River. First time fishing this river and I sure could use some tips or recommendations for finding and catching fish of all types. Seems like when you try new waters you find the fish the last day of the vacation. Any help would be greatly appreciated so that the kids have a good time on the water. Thanks for any help!

Cram, I went to the Vermillian river near Orr in July 1995. We did extremely well on pike up to 10 lbs. with most fish being 3-5 lbs. Johnson Silver Minnows worked well, but any of the standard pike spinner baits or spoons that are reasonably weedless with work.

There are also quite a few walleye and smallmouth bass. Twisters would be a good bet.

There is a waterfall you'll want to check out that is downstream from the camp. (I think there is only one camp on the river. There owners were Gundersons if I recall.) You should be able to get some walleyes and smallmouth below the falls. You can drive to that spot if you want.

Bring lots of bug spray and/or blood. The deer flies were brutal.

Of course things can change in 8 years. Hopefully someone else can give some input.

H-man, Thanks for the info! I realy appreciate it! It is the same place. I will let you know how we do if you want?

Did you have any luck using live bait? Or is there no need to bring? I was thinking about # leechs and flat of crawlers?

Any luck with with cranks in the main river?

Hope the flies are full! They are a real problem for the kids! Thanks for the heads up!
Good luck fishing!

Live bait is worth a try. Lots of snags, though. I didn't spend a lot of time chasing walleyes and caught mine on twisters and beetle spins. Black worked well. I would talk to the guys at the bait shop in Orr. I'm really not a great walleye fisherman.

The camp is very remote, so unless the kids will fish all day, you'll need to bring other things to do.

Please post a report.
