Having a free morning thought it fun to joining good friend and fellow fisherman, Duane "Buck" Bucklin from Grand Rapids, Michigan who spends numerous weeks up here on the bay each year chasing these walleyes as well. Leaving the harbor entrance in Kipling we viewed the sun just coming up at 6:00 am. Pretty neat time of the day in my mind, winds were calm but did increase from the north soon creating a nice chop as we started fishing south of the narrows of Gladstone. Water temps. were at 69' to 71' and after dropping crawler harness's and bottom-bouncers we fished water depths between 20 and 35 feet of water. There seems to be some good concentrations of walleye down here now the last couple of days and we had a pretty successful morning landing 8 nice eating size fish the largest being about 23 inches down to around 16 having numerous undersize fish caught and released as well.
We also noted still some good concentrations of baitfish that seem to be holding these fish, marking bait we were always seeing nice walleye near by them.
Blade choices varied from copper to the Northland "Holographic" blades off 2 ounce bottom-bouncers. Lots of fun and a great day spent with a great guy, "thanks for the time on the water, Buck!"
Here's a photo of our catch,
