WEST OKOBOJI has been good for big bluegills, especially off the deep weed edges. You can also find them suspended off steep drop offs. Light line, and ice jigs tipped with whigglers or waxworms work well. A piece of the new Berkley Gulp Grubs is another good choice on baits. You will catch some crappie and perch on the weed edges as well. There is good smallmouth fishing on the lakes rock piles. Power Tubes or a Frenzy Popper, which is a surface bait, are good artificial choices. Chubs and live crawfish are excellent live bait presentations. Walleyes are biting in the morning or late afternoon. Try Fireball Jigs and minnows off the weed lines or chubs on a Roach Rig fished deep. Crankbaits on off shore snap weights will take some fish in the deeper water.
EAST OKOBOJI is slower on keeper walleyes, but use shallow running crankbaits over the weedlines. In the deeper water, try Frenzy Diver Crankbaits. There is still some white bass and perch activity, especially in the evening.
BIG SPIRIT LAKE is good on walleyes, especially in the deeper water. The Frenzy Diver is one of many Crankbait choices. There is some crappie activity off the weed edges on Reeds Run. Perch action will require alot of sorting for 9 to 10 inchers. They can be located near the weedlines, or may be in the lakes basin.
Keep a tight line and may your aim be straight. Jim McDonnell is a professional fishing guide, avid hunter, trapper and outdoor writer in the Iowa Great Lakes area. 712 933-5532.
