Was on Leech and Kabetogama Lakes last week. Weather, for the most part, was not the best for fishing.
Arrived at Leech and hooked up with longtime guide and friend Al Maas. Al had a bass bite going, very fast action and many of the bass were between 2 and 4 1/2 pounds. Most were rice/slop fish, Reed-Runner spinnerbaits in the half ounce size with a Power Trailer. A few bass came on Jungle Jigs/Power Hawgs. Also took pike up to about 12 pounds on the edge of the slop. Weather was mostly drizzly and overcast, but the action was hot.
Next day weather was more pleasant. Al caught a walleye while I was tying a jig on. As soon as I got rigged, walleye action slowed, but pike action picked up. Al also took a 40 inch musky on 6 pound line and a jig. Got some jumbo perch as well.
Traveled to Kabetogama Lake the next day, arrived to rain and 40 mile per hour winds. Couldn't fish that day because of the weather.
There was ice on the dock the next morning, got started as soon as the fog lifted, about 8:45. Fished with Tim and Wade Watson. Tim has been on Kabetogama for many years, says the fishing now is better than ever.
Walleyes, sauger, and pike were all pretty active. Nice walleyes, 16-18 inches. The overwhelming majority of the fish came on Eye-Ball jigs in silver tipped with minnows. Tim says the Eye-Ball jig has been the best jig up there this year.
Had hoped to fish with friend Jim Kiehne on Kabetogama. Jim really has the crappies figured out on Kab, but with the weather that occurred on our arrival, we couldn't get out with Jim. Hope to get that done next year.
Leech and Kab are both great, but very different areas. Kab is wilderness, Leech is more developed. Call 800-833-1118 for more info on Leech, or go to their website leech-lake.com
