Just returned from my first open water fishing trip to Devil's Lake in North Dakota. Was very impressed with the fishery.
Fished with Ross Sensiba. Ross is originally from Montana. He visited Devil's Lake 14 years ago and never left. He says when it comes to fishing and hunting, the Devil's Lake area is the best there is.
We fished windblown points in 2-6 feet of water with crankbaits. I was throwing the new Frenzy Firestick suspending minnow in the firetiger color. By the time we quit fishing, this bait had that "chewed up" look. It did a great job on walleyes and pike, also caught one really big white bass.
We took walleyes up to about 26 inches, most of them were over 20 inches. Pike up to about 7 pounds, there is a great possiblity to take big pike in Devil's Lake as well.
Devil's Lake is probably best known for the perch through the ice deal, but it offers so much more. The open water fish was tremendous while we were there, and it's fun to just cruise the gravel roads in the late afternoon. We saw ten of thousands of ducks and geese, lots of deer and turkeys. Great area.
