View Full Version : What's your primetime for walleyes?

Seems like nearly every lake I've ice fished walleyes on typically has a "primetime" bite during the late afternoon to dark period, usually 4:30 pm to around 6:00 pm. I'd be interested to hear if other anglers have the same experience or if there are some lakes where primetime happens during other times of the day.

I have done best on walleyes during that late afternoon/early evening bite like you described.
However, I have also done well early in the day, sun-up to maybe 8 a.m. Definitely like the afternoon deal better.
According to everyone I have spoke with regarding the bite so far this year, Buck-Shot Rattle Spoons are the way to go.

My primetime has always been from when the sun hits the trees, until it's almost dark out. Last night, the bite lasted for about an hour, I had 11 bites from 4:30-5:30, nothing before or after that.

I've found that after pressure increases in an area-aside from the times you've described-bites can change to when there is the least pressure. The fish had changed their movements according to surface traffic on the ice.I stayed after everyone would leave-or got there before everyone else- and did well.Once surface traffic and noise increased-the bite would tail off.I found this to be true on a couple different lakes which are fished heavily.Something to consider- some people don't think walleyes will bite at noon-but they do. Good luck-Lou in Alex.

Over the years, I've noticed primetime bite to be consistant to the water clarity of each particular body of water.
There are certain lakes or rivers that I have fished quite a bit, where it seems the Walleyes are programmed to bite at a certain time of day.
This seems to stay the same year after year.
For me, the overall, majority, definately is the what I call the "DUSK ATTACK"!! But, this is not always the best time.
The observations Lou mentioned however, do make a lot of sense. As I have noticed something very similar to that on certain lakes.
Very interesting subject Mike!

Fish Hooks Lake here in Park Rapids has been 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM with scattered fish after dark. However fished the flats once with Joe Fellegy and like the summer it was a day bit, or all day until about 4:00 PM. Shoreline it was from about 4:30 PM to dark.
