Hi Friends,
There is a great article at www.iowaoutdoors.com as relates checking ice depth.
The basic context is that in checking ice with this current weather pattern, the ice takes the form of an obtuse triangle, thicker at the base, getting thinner as you go to the middle.
The article refers from going from 7" fifteen feet in from shoreline to 1" in the middle. BE CAREFUL!! If you can't get your buddy to lead, don't go!!!!
Although I'm still a novice, and we joke about part of this.................
1.) NEVER go alone. Hav!!!!
2) Drill test holes every 10-15' on the way out. (We can all crank out 4" multiple times!)
3.) Have a rope with a throw!
4.) Buy or make up some picks that you can get to quick! They won't do you any good in the P/U.
5.) Teach your minnows water life savings procedures!
6.) Take a cell phone. (Rex has some great buys for ice fishermen/women.)
7.) Let someone know where you are going and when they can expect you back. (I guess if it's a couple of hours, they'll know where to find the human floats???!!!)
BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS
