Hello, I am heading for Leech Lake this 7/31 for a family reunion, and we always try some fishing. Anyone have some fishing tips/locations they are willing to share? We camp near Steamboat Bay, and use cabin boats, so we the farthest west we usually get is Goose Island in Sucker Bay. Big Leech is usually pretty big water for a cabin boat!
Thanks in advance for any input

Walleyes on Leech are pretty wind-oriented. When the wind has been blowing into an area for a couple of days you can catch them shallow. I have had some wonderful action in two feet of water with Fire-Ball jigs, 1/16th ounce, with minnow or leech on Little and Big Hardwood, as well as some of the other points in that area, including the wind-blown side of Goose Island.

The shallow structures on the big part of the lake can be very good also.

Let us know how you do.

Returned August 7th. The fishing was typical for our trip. You need to be a better fisherman than me to catch walleye at Leech this time of year. No walleyes were caught between 8 people fishing for a week. Lots of 2 lb northerns bite though so there is some action. There were DNR personnel at every camp on the lake doing creel surveys and talking with fisherman about what's happening on the lake. Also, there were fliers posted up around the lake about meeting being scheduled about slot limits etc for the lake. I think anything goes for walleye right now on Leech, and it shows. Just on the Walker flats alone, there would be at least 30 boats every night at sunset fishing walleye. Panfish bite is good also.
