Hi
The walleye bite on Mille Lacs is pretty typical for mid-August - anglers are finding the best fishing to be right around sunrise and again around sunset. Slip bobbers and leeches fished over your favorite rock pile are best approach. The wind can play a big part in extending this bite into the daytime hours... if you have significant wind, anchor your boat off the reef a bit and let your bait drift up to the rocks. This approach is most effective in 6-15 feet of water. Without the wind, move out to deeper water and drift or troll with nightcrawlers/spinners OR stick to the shallows and fish smallmouth bass. Northern fishing has been decent in the bays along the south end of Mille Lacs - float 6-9 inch suckers under a bobber along the weed edges (10-12 feet). Wahkon Bay would be a good place to start. Muskie fishing has been decent too - most of the pressure has been on the weedlines, but some reef fish are showing up as well. Plan to throw the whole tackle arsenal at these guys... we've seen fish taken on just about everything but the kitchen sink! Smallmouth action always heats up in August, and this year has been no different. Nearly all the effort has been directed toward the areas that the Water Patrol has marked out with reef/hazzard markers. Stick to less than 8 feet of water over the biggest rocks you can find. Tubes, Flukes and Craws are the top artificial baits.
Yes, we still have big leeches!
