WEST OKOBOJI is good on Bluegills. Sometimes they are deep in 30-feet of water and suspended. Watch your locator then anchor for best results. Small Genz Jigs, Fire-fly Jigs or small Jigging Spoons tipped with Dew worms or micro crawlers all work. Smallmouth action is good. Live crawfish or Power tubes fished on small rock piles work best. For Largemouth, cast the docks with Buzz Baits or jig and Power Craws. Muskie action seems to be best on the inside of the weed edge or under docks. Perch action is fair in 14-foot of water but most are caught by Bluegill fisherman. Fly casting in the early morning and twilight is an excellent time for panfish and smallies. Walleye action is still slow, some sub legals are being caught along with an occasional lunker on Thill Slip Bobbers, Attractor hooks and leeches in deeper water. Work the rockpiles near deep water. Fireball Jigs vertical jigged with minnows is another good option. Crappie action is best over the weeds and under docks. Early morning will get you the best results.
BIG SPIRIT is good for Crappies and Perch over the weed beds. Small Power Grubs on a 1/16 oz. jig or a Rock a roo hair jig cast into weed pockets is very effective. On the Perch, try a small Buckshot Rattle Spoon with a Dropper hook and Waxworm. Walleye action is slow on legal size fish. Twilight time increases your odds. Try trolling Crankbaits in 16 to 20-foot of water, or cast over the weeds. Some nice Northern Pike are being taken by muskie fisherman casting the weed edges. Smallmouth action is good off weed and rock edges. Use a 4-inch Power Minnow on a 1/8 oz. jig head. Try working it snap jig style. A 3-inch Gulp Minnow will produce fish also. Largemouth are mostly around wood docks. A weedless jig and Power Craw pitched under the docks will get action.
THE LITTLE SIOUX RIVER is producing some nice catfish on dip baits. Larger fish are being caught on fresh cutbait at night or the early morning hours. Don't forget your mosquito spray or head net. Cabelas makes a bug proof mesh jacket and head net that really works well. A pair of Carhartt jeans or Bibs will protect your legs and lower body from bugs, weeds and whatever else the river bank dishes out.
SOUTH DAKOTA'S Lake Wauby, Lake Thompson and Chamberlain areas are still producing good walleye action. So much water to be fished, so little time. Until next time, keep a tight line and may your aim be straight. The Fishing Professor, Jim McDonnell is a professional fishing guide in the Iowa Great Lakes area.
