Guth, McCarty Take the Lead on Day I of Wisconsin State Championship of Walleye Fishing

Tough! Tough! Tough! That's the only way to describe the first day of the Wisconsin State Championship of Walleye Fishing at Green Lake. Tim Guth from Monico, WI and David McCarty from Pelican Lake, WI lead the competition with one fish weighing 1.63 pounds.
"It was really tough for everybody," said Gander Mountain Grand National Walleye Cup(GNWC) Tournament Site Director Greg Liebel. "We knew it was going to be hard. Even the local guides I visited with this past week said the walleye bite was totally off."
Weather conditions were also tough with rain off and on during the day, cold temperatures and a strong east wind. "I don't know how many people have told me an east wind on Green Lake really shuts off the fish," noted Liebel.
However, with Sunday's forecast for a light northwest breeze and warmer temperatures, Liebel hopes for things to turn around. "Tim and David were both thankful to catch the fish they did. However, the rest of the teams are all in the hunt. I know that these teams will continue to give their best effort."
The Wisconsin State Championship of Walleye Fishing, which is the fifth of eight such tournaments on the Gander Mountain Grand National Walleye Cup circuit, continues with the final day's action on Sunday.
Sunday's action follows the same format as Saturday with take-off at 7 a.m. and weigh-in at 3 p.m. at Sunset Park on County Road A, at the east end of the lake. "I'm optimistic that things will turn around tomorrow," added Liebel. I hope we have a good crowd. I think they will enjoy seeing whether our leaders will be able to hold on and claim the title of champions of the Wisconsin State Championship of Walleye Fishing. We'll also find out if the change in weather will have made a difference in the bite."
