Hi

Conditions are prime for a great fall bite - the water temp is dropping (currently 64 degrees), water clarity is 5-6 feet, and the "slot" is the most permissive we've seen for years. Fall can be hot or cold - sometimes just starting a few hours earlier or staying a few hours later can make all the difference! We're seeing promising numbers of smaller (8-11 inch) walleye showing up around many of the shallow rock reefs... a great sign for the 2005 and 2006 seasons. These fish seem to be hungry - possibly because of a gap in their desired food size (low young-of-the-year numbers this year AND the 5-7 inch mega-hatch is too big for them to eat). Even though these fish are "legal" at this point, they're well short of "good eater" size... consider using some restraint before reducing them to possession - yes, they're the right color BUT most won't even go a 1/2 pound! Your best bet is still at first and last light. Stick to 6-12 feet on your favorite rock reef with a slip bobber and a leech. The mid-day might be better spent looking for smallies or northern - both have been active. Muskie action is improving - we've seen fish a lot of different baits, so don't be afraid to throw some of the "oldies-but-goodies". Northern fishing has been decent in the bays along the south end of Mille Lacs - float 6-9 inch suckers under a bobber along the weed edges (10-12 feet). Wahkon Bay would be a good place to start. Nearly all the effort has been directed toward the areas that the Water Patrol has marked out with reef/hazard markers. Stick to less than 8 feet of water over the biggest rocks you can find. Tubes, Flukes and Craws are the top artificial baits.

Yes, we still have big leeches!
