WEST OKOBOJI: There is good bluegill and perch action on the weed edges. Early in the AM is the best bite. Try Minnie Jigs and Whigglers from an anchored position. There is some crappie action under large wood docks on minnows. Legal size walleye action still remains on the slow side but a few are showing up off the weed edges on minnows and chubs. Smallmouth action is good on live crawfish or minnows and also on 4" Power Worms, 5" Sinking Gulp minnows or a Power tube. Most Largemouth action is under the docks on spinner baits or off the deep weed edges fishing a Drop Shot rig. Muskie action is best in the late afternoon or on a cloudy day, casting bucktails.
BIG SPIRIT LAKE has a good walleye bite going on Crankbaits in the basin area. Mid afternoons and evenings seem to be the best producing times. There is fair crappie action over the weeds on minnows. There is good smallmouth off the weed edges on live minnows or 4" Power Minnows. For Largemouth, check out docks with Berkley's Blade Runner or Jig and Frog Trailer. Perch action is fair, you can get a mess of 9 to 10-inchers with some time spent searching.
EAST OKOBOJI is slow. It should pick up in a week or so. There is some perch and white bass activity.
THE LITTLE SIOUX RIVER is excellent for catfish and the walleye activity is picking up. Nothing beats a Power Grub on the Little Sioux, except maybe a live nightcrawler.
Keep a tight line and may your aim be straight. Jim McDonnell is a professional fishing guide on the Iowa Great Lakes. He can be reached at 712 933-5532.
