I'm curious if any of you use special ice/cold weather lines or not. What is your favorite line for dropping through the ice?

Thanks for the information.

Another vote for fireline micro ice here. I used 4lb last year and c&r'd a bunch of 4-8lbers. Also caught allot of crappies and sunnies on it.

Ilove the Micro Ice from Trilene. Stays soft in cold weather, doesn't stretch too much for fishing in deeper water, and comes in three pound test. Perfect for thos big Devils Lake perch.

Keep the line tight,

Another vote for trilene Micro ice. I use 4 pound for just about everything. It's super tough, and lasted me almost all season on the 2 reels I jig with last year.

A couple of years ago spiderwire came out with an ice line that was 4# test and 1# diameter. In my opinion it put fireline to shame. Stayed alot softer and didn't slip like fireline plus there was no fraying even at the end of the season but alas for some unknown reason they discontinued it. Have heard rumors they may bring it back but who knows. If they do give it a try and compare some side by side with the fireline.

If I am going to fish in a heated house I will use Micro Ice Fireline. If I am going to fish without a heated shelter I will use Micro Ice line. The fireline works good in both situations both this is my preference.

What ever happened to monofilament? 6-8 Lb green.

It works fine, and I use it on most of my ice reels, but the trilene ice stuff is so much easier to work with than XL. I use 6 lb XL on all my slip bobber rigs and 10 or 12 lb silver thread as leaders (dacron mainline) on my tip ups, but my jigging rods all have the trilene ice line.

I've never used thge Micro Ice line. I still have some 4 and 6 lb. Berkley UltraThin that I bought before they discontinued it. Out here we do a lot of our ice fishing for trout with 1/32 to 1/100 oz. jigs so light and limp lines are a must. What are the advantages of the Micro-Ice over UltraThin or other monofilaments?

I use Seaguar Carbon Ice for eyes in 8 or 10lb. This fruorocarbon line works great for jigging in deep water for giant great lakes eyes. It doesn't have much stretch for good hooksets, it is not visible to the fish in clear water and it doesn't absorb any water.

I agree with eye_guide, the spiderice line (spiderwire) is better than the berkley microice. I still have a couple reels spooled up and trying to make it last to hopefully when they make it again. It is softer and limper than fireline but also containing waterproof coatings to prevent reel freeze up.

I really like using the powerpro also but will absorb water after extended use. I used it quit a bit last year and like it. I still like it better than microice because it is also limper.

(1) 2-4lb Maxima
(2) Cabela pro mono 8lb green all year, possibly the limpest mono out there.
