The LITTLE SIOUX RIVER DAM at Linn Grove is one of springs best walleye and northern pike spots. Cast a 1/8 or 1/16 oz. jig, with a Power Grub or Gulp Minnow and you're in business. There are a number of low head dams on our rivers and they all have a concentration of walleye, northern pike and catifh. The month of March and early April will be your best fishing. Take along a stringer, a 6-gallon bucket and a Frabill net. That net will save you many fish.
If you are really into fishing, you can't go wrong by joining the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club, now in its 39th year. It will be the best $20 you ever spent. Lots of information on hot fishing areas are available from club members. Send your name, address and zip to Kendall Mead, 512 4th Ave. SE, Spencer, Iowa 51301. Don't forget the $20. Our spring seminar will be held at Godfathers Pizza in Spencer on March 17th at 6:00 PM You may join the club at this time also. Free pizza and the seminar is free to 2005 members. Speaker will be the Fishing Magician, Tom Mead, a guide from Long Prairie, Minnesota.
Ice Fishing in the Iowa Great Lakes area will be an iffy situation after this weekend. Call about ice conditions before heading up. As of Friday, there was still good bluegill and crappie activity at the north end and Millers Bay area of West Okoboji. The Grade on Big Spirit and Templars Lagoon are the best for crappie and bluegill. Some perch activity on the south end of the lake.
Satellite lakes, like Lost Island, Trumbull, High Lake, Silver Lake at Lake Park, Silver Lake at Ayrshire all have a sporadic panfish, walleye and northern pike bite.
The fishing is always good, it's the catching thats iffy. Jim McDonnell is a professional fishing guide on the Iowa Great Lakes and surrounding lakes. He can be reached at 712 933-5532.
