Just returned from a couple of days in the Kabetogama Lake area. Kab is truly wilderness. Many, many miles of shoreline with very little development. Lots of wildlife and lots of walleyes.

We were on Kab on a very windy day, but the islands break up the wind pretty well. We drifted live bait rigs and Fire-Ball jigs and tooks lots of nice walleyes. Jigs best with shiners, rigs best with leeches.

Kab has a 13-17 inch keep slot and it is working very well. We took plenty of eaters, but also lots of 19-22 inchers. Fished shoreline areas that the wind was blowing into, 8-12 foot depths.

Fished with Wade Watson, a very good guide/outfitter in that area. Wade is very knowledgable regarding Kab and is just a good guy to spend a day in the boat with.

Website is kabetogama.com

Should have included that in previous post.

Also, eighth ounce Fire-Balls, brighter colors and glow colors were best.

Bob,

Missed you while were there. We had good luck fishing for the deeper fish. (34-44 feet) The first night caught 34 fish in about 3 hours for the two of us. We were forced to have a fish fry as we limited out on nice keepers.

We caught 7 fish between 18” and 24”, all were released. We also caught numbers that were under the slot. This means fishery should continue to be healthy for years to come.

The next morning we went back out and caught another 12-14 fish, 5 of which were keeper sized.

My friend had inadvertently re-spooled with a blue tinted line. This ended up being a good test as fish were at 5-1 against the tinted line. Switched him to clear line on the same model pole and it went to 3-1 right away. This whole time we were using the same size and color of jigs.

Nothing scientific about our accidental test, however the results are worth noting! I have noted the same thing previously concerning Fireline. That does not mean these other lines are bad, just that on this lake during these conditions the fish reacted much more positively to the clear line.

Bob,
Great to have you and Don in the boat again! We did have a great day on the water...and we also caught some walleyes. Sounds like others were having similar luck that day. Kabetogama has a good range of keepers, "big walleyes", and small-size eyes for the future!

Other reports during that same stretch of days were not as positive, but from those people that I talked with...they were trying to GET-OUT of the wind, and we were smack in the windy side getting pounded by waves in some of those area's...but they produced!

Thanks again,
Stop by when you're up in this country again

The name Kabetogma brings back memories. My first experiences to walleye fishing was there when I was 10 yrs old. I'm now 50 yrs old.
We use to go to Harmony Beach as my Dad knew the owners and always had fun. I remember catching alot of fish just off the dock. Is Harmony Beach still there? If so my next trip to Canada I will swing in. I have some great old pictures.

Yes, Watson's Harmony Beach is still there. Hey Wade, is Tim Watson your dad? We have stayed there a few times, very nice resort to this day.

Tim is my uncle, and he and his wife Char ran "Watson's Harmony beach" up until 3 years ago...

It is now call Carlson's Harmony Beach and is a wonderful place to stay. Tim could tell you all the names of previous owners, they ran the resort for 17 or 18 years....

He and I operate our guide service together, and he's taught me a great deal about the history, and a few walleye "spots" over the past 13 years that I've been up here!

Kabetogama is simply beautiful...26,000 acres connected to an additional 70,000+ acres of water within the National Park. Kab has over 250-300 islands and their is over 1200 within Voyageurs Park! Fishing is fun, but the scenery is spectacular...
