Weekend Outlook
6-30-2005
Hi
Extremely high winds have kept all but a few die-hard anglers off Mille Lacs the past few days - nearly 4 inches of rain fell in just the last 24 hours! Prior to that, the bite was similar to what we've seen for the past few weeks - decent numbers of daytime fish continue on the mud flats. Try these areas with a crawler/spinner (gold, copper or pink) or SLOW WAY DOWN and use a leech and a floating rig. 7-mile and Center Bar are good places to start. The deep gravel has been either hot or cold - use the crawler/spinner thing here too. The evening bite has been excellent for numbers, so-so for size. Use a slip bobber/leech on your favorite rock reef. These evening fish are active from 6-28 feet BUT you need to be pretty tight to the "structure". This bite can start anytime after 8pm - DON’T BE LATE! Smallmouth have moved out a little deeper - The water has cleared up somewhat, so look for smallies in 3-8 feet. Small crankbaits and plastic grubs have worked best so far. Hawkbill Reef is a good place to start. We don't talk about Largemouth bass often, but if you've ever wanted to fish Mille Lacs for these critters, now's the time! Throw the usual stuff in the slop and weeds and hang on! The northern bite is starting to come around - suckers drifted under a bobber have worked best so far. Cove and Vineland are the best spots right now. Muskie action is still slow.
The surface temperature is in the low 70's. The high winds have mixed up the water to where most of the lake is now at the same (surface) temperature.
The weather for the weekend looks like this:
Fri...Partly cloudy. Highs around 70. West winds 5 to 10 mph.
Sat...Partly cloudy. A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs around 80. South winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 30 percent.
Sun...Partly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms. Highs around 80.
Mon...Partly cloudy. Highs around 80.
The last quarter moon was 6-28-05
If you’re coming to the Mille Lacs area over the 4th of July weekend, you will find several fireworks displays in the area. Our advice: Get a couple dozen leeches, head out to your favorite reef, throw out the bobbers and enjoy the show. You might even be interrupted by a few of those pesky walleye!
Having company this weekend? We have "Vacation Packs" of nightcrawlers already in bedding - great for larger groups!
Don't forget to check out our weekly "Shop Special" before your visit!
Finally...
Ole and Sven were on the roof, laying tile, when a sudden gust of wind came and knocked down their ladder. "I have an idea," said Ole. "We'll throw you down, and then you can pick up the ladder." "What, do you think I'm stupid?" asked Sven. "I have an idea. I'll shine my flashlight, and you can climb down on the beam of light." "What, do you think I'm stupid?" asked Ole, "You'll just turn off the flashlight when I'm halfway there!"
Have a great weekend,
