Upper Red Lake is scheduled to re-open to walleye harvest in 2006. Everything that I hear indicates there will be a two(2) walleye limit. Not sure on size limits on those two(2) walleyes. Here is my question.

Would you travel to Upper Red Lake, about one(1) hour north of Bemidji, MN for two(2) walleyes. The walleye fishing will be fantastic, you can't go there and not catch them. We catch more walleyes than crappies when we're fishing for crappies, and even catch some when fishing for northern pike with big spinnerbaits or big crankbaits.

I guess what I'm wondering is would you go there and how far would you drive for world-class walleye action, knowing that you are limited to two(2) walleyes.

Looking forward to responses.

I dont care too much about eating fish. Besides, stay there for a week, catch 50+ eyes a day and have 4 fillets for a couple of nice fish fries and take a small meal home-I have had MUCH worse trips.

Think of it this way, isnt LOTW down to 4 eyes (plus 4 sauger)? I dont think many people care about that. People still fished Mille Lacs when the slot was so tight that catching more than 2 keepers was a rare feat.

I care nothing about limits as I care not to keep any eyes. I fish for walleyes 70 days out of the year and keep a few eyes a year to eat. I would not hesitate to drive to RL for some fast eye action. I understand this lake opens up next year. Can someone give me resorts or locations to stay at for fishing this lake. Thanks.

I would come for a 0 fish limit. It's all about catching. I keep fish when I am into a bunch of 16 or 17 inchers, but nothing bigger. I think it's time we understand how we are going to give our children and grand children some of the fishing experiences that I have had.

Bob,

I travel to Gullrock Lake in Ontario which is a 16 hour trip for me and my family. Every year we purchase a Conservation license which has a limit of 2 walleyes. I am willing to do this for a couple of reasons first is the world class walleye fishing, and secondly I totally enjoy the wilderness experience I get while I am there. I am also at the point of my life where I am more in pursuit of a true monster rather than the number of fish I put on the table.

So to answer your question I would travel to Red Lake to get in on some world class walleye fishing even though the limit would be two.

I would also travel there from southern MN. We travel to Lac Suel every year and buy the same conservation lic. and we bring home no fish. Just have a couple meals up there. Our resort owners actually discount our rate to cover our lic. just for buying the conservation lic.
