1. How long will spikes keep in the fridge?

2. Are there any on-line bait vendors that you can recommend?

3. Should I be looking at the color-dyed spikes?

Thanks, JC

It's been my experience while working in a baitshop that the Spike is the heartiest of all the lil' buggers. They will keep for a long time in the fridge, as long as the sawdust bedding is clean, and you remove the dead ones on a regular basis.

It has also been my experience that the dyed spikes do die quicker than the natural ones, but they do work well ice fishing. Blue seems to die the fastest.

spikes=i believe they are talking about we here in minnesota refer to as waxworms or larva, or as in the case of colored waxworms or spikes; eurolarva

A "spike" is a maggot; the larvae of the blue bottle fly.

I'm trying to figure out how many to order and if I should get the assorted color mix or not. You save $$$ if you order by the K's. Its kinda goofy up here. They charge more for spikes than they do wax worms. On-line vendors from what I've found are exactly opposite. The perch fishing is gettin hot up here in ND (on 4-5" of ice :)).

Just make sure they get into the fridge when you get home. My buddy put a snuff tin with 5-6 dozen in his bucket when we packed up. He put the bucket in his back hall for a couple weeks when he got home. He took the seat off the bucket and his house got filled with big flys. His wife was NOT happy. But we still laugh about it.

Spikes are maggots! Much smaller and tougher than a waxworm. :'(

Hey, I've had good luck before on the Devils Lake jumbos by hatching the spikes out and using the flies for bait. Not saying it works all the time but I've seen times when they are the only thing to work so I try to always keep some on hand. Just make sure to keep the lid tight.
