Weekend Outlook
7-28-2005
Hi
The walleye bite remains above average for this stage of the season – surface temps are consistently in the mid 70’s now, and while we may not be seeing the bite we saw a month ago we’re well ahead of where we were last year at this time. One of the recent bonuses came in strong winds over the last week or so – these winds turned on some of the 12-18 foot rock humps, and the bobber bite started all over again! Reefs like Agate, Lakeside, Banana and Kings make great places to bobber-up in big wind. If you loose the wind, head straight back to the mud flats – the mud bite is still steady enough to provide a great day of fishing! The smallmouth bite remains good, however the water is stained to about 3 feet visibility. Muskie action is improving... the best muskie bite is yet to come!
Yes, we still have leeches!
The weather for the weekend looks like this:
Friday: Partly cloudy. A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs 75 to 80. Southeast winds 10 mph increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon.
Friday Night: Warmer. Partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Lows 60 to 65. South winds 10 to 15 mph.
Saturday: Partly cloudy. Highs around 85. South winds around 10 mph.
Saturday Night: Partly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Lows around 65. South winds 5 to 10 mph.
Sunday and Sunday Night: Partly cloudy. Highs around 90. Lows 60 to 65.
The last quarter moon is today, 7-28-2005.
A couple weeks ago, I included a piece about the lifecycle of leeches in the Weekend Outlook. This week I’d like to address a couple points related to that piece:
1. Keep your leeches cool – placing them in one of these “livewell leech bags” is great when the water is in the 50’s. Now that the surface temps (remember, that’s where your livewell water comes from) are running in the mid 70’s, YOU will kill them in a matter of minutes. The same goes for leaving them in your trunk while you stop for a burger – once they’re damaged, they won’t come back.
2. Buy what you need – some folks go long on their leeches and then try to hold the leftovers from week-to-week in the fridge. Again this is ok early in the year, but this time of year it’s more likely that you will come back to a container of weak or dead bait.
3. Give them some room – the little cups that leeches often come in are not meant to be a permanent home for them, rather, a way for you to get them to a decent size container that holds a fair amount of water. Styrofoam buckets or Playmate-type coolers work best AND they help maintain cooler water temps for the leeches.
Try these tips and keep those leeches happy!

Finally,
A string walks into a bar and asks for a martini. The bartender says, “We don’t serve strings here” and throws him out. The string gathers himself , roughens up his ends, ties himself into a knot and heads back into the bar. The bartender says, “Ain’t you that piece of string that was just here?” and the string replies, “No, I’m a frayed knot”.
Have a great weekend,
