Weekend Outlook

3-2-2006

Hi

All the fish houses are off and the lake is wide open for a few more weeks of perch fishing - the season ended with a few stray walleye being caught, but the highlight may have been the 2 pound (on a scale - not just guessing) perch that was weighed in at one of the local contests on Saturday! We see some nice perch come through the bait shop from time-to-time, but it takes a real monster to go 2 pounds... congratulations to that lucky angler!

We received less than 2 inches of snow total this week, much of which is already gone. The snow that's left is pretty hard. About 22 inches of ice covers most of the lake, and except for the pressure breaks (lots of "flexing" this week) travel is good. Most of the resorts still have their roads in place, but expect maintenance on many of those roads to become minimal as March marches on.

We're seeing perch on some of the shoreline breaks in 25-32 feet, but the bulk of the fish continue to come off the mud flats. Some "rogue" tullibee are beginning to hit too. Fatheads and wax worms have been the ticket this week, with a slight nod going to the waxies. Fish 'em on a small jigging spoon and stay mobile until you find some decent fish.

The walleye, northern, muskie and bass seasons are closed.

All 2006 fish and game licenses (and shelter licenses) are due March 1. Remember, license sales are cash only - no plastic cards.

The weather for the weekend (from the National Weather Service) looks like this:

Friday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 26. Wind chill values between zero and 10. North northwest wind between 5 and 8 mph.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low near 6. Wind chill values between -5 and zero. East southeast wind around 7 mph.

Saturday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 31. Southeast wind between 9 and 15 mph.

Saturday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 13.

Sunday: A 40 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high around 32.

The first quarter moon is March 6th.

Finally,

Confucius say, "Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground".

Have a great weekend,
