Weekend Outlook

Hi
Nice opener, huh? I don't like to dwell on the negative (but I will); 38 degrees, near constant rain and screaming wind BUT... the walleyes REALLY bit! The north end of Mille Lacs was the place to be - first, to get some relief from Mother Nature and second to haul in what is being talked about as the hottest "opening day bite" in recent years. Granted if you take 99% of the people on Mille Lacs and send them to the northern 1/3rd of the lake, that's where the fish will come from. But even the folks who braved the southern 2/3rds of the lake caught decent numbers of fish. Although the MAJOR bug hatch in the beginning of the week slowed things down somewhat, I still look for an above average bite for the next several weeks.
Most of the walleye action is on the north end of the lake this week. Some of the better areas include Pike Point, Wealthwood, Carlsona and Fishers. Fish these areas in 18-24 feet with a floating (in-line floater or floating jighead) snell. Don't stretch the leader out too long... 3-5 feet is PLENTY for this technique. Tip the rig with a shiner or leech. Red, yellow and green have been the top colors. Also, don't "oversize" your leech - freshness/quality is WAY more important than size right now. A legitimate "large" is fine. As the wind settles down, look for the areas around Big Point, Indian Point and Graveyard to hold some great slip bobber action in the evenings. Northern action has been slow so far.
Sunset Friday is 8:40. . Navigation lights are required from sunset to sunrise. (Remember to keep your white stern (back) light on while still fishing or at anchor. This light must be visible for 360 degrees around the boat and may not be blocked from view (see sunrise/sunset schedule at end of regulation booklet, pg. 78).
The bass opener is NEXT WEEKEND - May 27th.
The weather for the weekend (from the National Weather Service) looks like this:
Friday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 70. East wind at 8 mph becoming southwest.
Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low near 48. West southwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming south southeast.
Saturday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1pm. Partly cloudy, with a high near 65. Calm wind becoming northeast between 5 and 8 mph.
Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 41.
Sunday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 66.
The last quarter moon is 5-20-2006
Don't to check out our weekly "shop special" at http://www.lundeens.com/shop.html
Finally,
