Weekend Outlook

5-25-2006

Hi

Change is upon us - the "bug hatch of the century" appears to by winding down, we finally had a few days of "un-north" wind, surface temps are into the mid/high 50's and the bite has started to spread out a bit. While the north end is still a good spot to start your Mille Lacs trip, we're seeing pockets of fish showing up all around the lake. Mud, gravel, deep rock, shallow rock, shoreline and weedlines are all spittin' out fish on and off throughout the day. It's tough to park on one spot for the whole day right now - mobility is a big plus, but with a little persistence you should be able to put together a nice mess of fish. We've seen fish from 4 feet to 34 feet so far this week, but the two best ranges have been from 15-18 and 22-26 feet. Leeches are still the top bait - crawlers and/or fatheads are pretty equal for the #2 spot. The northern bite has been slow so far.

The surface temperature is 57 degrees.

The Minnesota bass opener is May 27th (this Saturday). Remember on Mille Lacs, "release immediately all smallmouth under 21 inches - bag limit is 1" (over 21 inches). Many of us believe that Mille Lacs holds the next State smallmouth record - You'll find most of these fish on the "beds" now, which poses the annual "ethical dilemma"... do we disturb these fish while they're on the beds? Biologists have produced gobs of data on this - you decide what theory to subscribe to!

From the 2006 Minnesota Fishing Regulations synopsis: "It is unlawful to transport infested water (including in livewells and bait containers) from infested waters" (pg. 66). Mille Lacs, along with a host of other Minnesota waters has been declared "infested" for several years now.
