Only .06 of a pound separated the top two teams at the I.O.W.A. Walleye Tournament trail's Lake Rathbun TowTector Shield Qualifier on Sunday, May 28.
The team of Kim Floden from Bussey and Terry Carr from Otley won the title and a check for $2100 with a six-fish limit weight of 15.71 pounds. They barely outdistanced the team of Brandon Carpenter from Mason City and John Mason, who cashed the second place check of $800 for their six-fish limit weight of 15.65 pounds.
"This was our first qualifier in which we had one of our sponsors provide a $500 bonus check for the winners. Thanks to TowTector for stepping up and being the first sponsor to provide an extra $500 to the first place purse. I want to thank them for their willingness to provide this extra support," said I.O.W.A. Executive Director Dean Higgins. "It was hot out there today. The fish were on the move, but over half of the I.O.W.A. teams brought in six-fish limits!"
The team of Cory Batterson from Pleasant Hill and Scott Sundet from Urbandale took third place and a check for $620 with their six-fish limit weight of 14.34 pounds.
Fourth place and a check for $550 went to the team of David Murray from Carlisle and Jeff Becker from Clear Lake with a six-fish limit weight of 13.51 pounds. They also captured the StowMaster Award of $200 for being the highest placing team using a Stow Master net.
The team of David Lampe from Britt and David Cockrell from Forest City took home the Cabela's Big Fish award of a $100 certificate for their 7.32-pound walleye.
The Berkley Family Team Award of a pair of rod and reel combos valued at $100 each went to the team of Les and Peg Roenig from Amana for their 10th place finish. They also received the TowTector Shield award of two $75 certificates for the team finishing just out of the money.
The Need Mack's Lure Award of $200 went to Terry Mitchell from Woodward and Adam Claussen from Long Grove.
With the strong south wind, Floden and Carr worked the Island View area on the calm side of the lake. They pulled #5 blue/chrome Shad Raps in 5-7 feet of water.
The second and third place teams worked live bait. Carpenter and Mason had a 100-fish day and were in by early afternoon. Their fish were on the move, however, and instead of finding them off the points they had pre-fished, Carpenter and Mason went to fishing spinners and leeches over shallow four-foot flats.
Meanwhile, Batterson and Sundet trolled chartreuse/orange spinners tipped with either leeches or crawlers.
Next up on the I.O.W.A. circuit will be the Motor Inn Spirit Lake Qualifier on Sunday, September 17. "There is a lot of time before this final qualifier, and I know that teams will be studying the standings and making preliminary decisions on what their approach will be as they prepare for Big Spirit," added Higgins.
On the line will be the Humminbird Team of the Year honors. Currently, it's a three team race with Greg Lowenberg and Dale Frederick from Fairfield in first place with 26 points; Terry Green from Mason City and Steve Templeton from Clear Lake with 28 points; and Joel Shaw from Fairfield and Dave Smithburg from Libertyville with 30 points.
