In my hometown of Sheffield, IA one evening the price for gas was $2.77, the next morning it was $2.71. I left town that morning, drove half hour to Allison IA, price of gas was $2.63. Drove another half hour to Waverly IA, price was $2.56. Returned to Sheffield that same day, gas was still $2.71. Wonder why there is so much difference in such a short distance.
I realize the difference between $2.71 a gallon and $2.55 a gallon is only about $3.00 for a 20 gallon fill, but I still wonder why so much difference.

Ya know Bob, I had a conversation with an acquaintance the other day about how little difference in total price a dime or even 20 cents makes when you fill a tank with gas (for me, $2 - $4).
His point was that it shouldn't make any difference in where you vacation -- you aren't spending much more, really.
I felt this was a bit short-sighted, and wanted to multiply the difference in price by the number of times I fill my tank annually. . .I believe that totally more accurately reflects what we are faced with.
Either way, I get your point. . .last February, returning to Nebraska from Arkansas, I found gas for $1.89 a gallon north of Kansas City along I-29. . .that became my benchmark!

About a month ago, the difference in price between Ankeny and Cedar Rapids was 22 cents, with Ankeny being cheaper! It is difficult to imagine the difference being due to delivery costs. go figure.

The difference between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids is consistently 10 - 12 cents, with CR being lower. Figure that one out.
