Weekend Outlook

6-29-2006

Hi

Most Mille Lacs anglers are still finding good/great numbers of walleye again this week - the mud bite has been noticeably better than the gravel, but the gravel may hold a better ratio of "keepers". Crawlers/spinners continue to out-perform most anything out there. Leeches, rainbows and crankbaits are working well too, but crawlers seem to be the best. Look for 27+ feet of water off the edge of the various mud flats and gravel bars. Highway Bar, Sloppy Joes, Curly's Flat and Backer Flat are each worth a look. Gold, pink and green are the top spinner colors. Most of the smallies have made the move to their summer spots now - fish 'em in 3-7 feet of water around the shallow rock reefs on the south end of Mille Lacs. The Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Boat and Water Department has done most of your "search work" for you by placing reef markers on many of the shallow rock reefs around the southern 2/3rds of the lake. Fish these areas with tube baits and small crankbaits. Look for the biggest rocks you can find... the smallies won't be far away!

There has been a high volume of traffic at the free/public boat ramps so far this year. Parking at these (and all) facilities is ultimately limited, so a wise angler should come armed with a plan AND a back-up plan. Simply "showing up at the lake" will likely result in unnecessary frustration. Often you'll find shorter lines and better parking at a local resort.

Surface temps in the low 70's this week remind us of the importance of handling fish properly - play the fish in a timely manner, un-hook and revive/release the fish immediately.

The weather for the weekend (from the National Weather Service) looks like this:

Friday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1pm. Partly cloudy, with a high near 86. South southeast wind at 9 mph becoming west southwest.

Friday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. West wind at 6 mph becoming south.

Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a high near 79. South wind 5 to 13 mph becoming northwest.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 56.

Sunday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 81.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 58.

Monday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 80.

Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 55.

Independence Day: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82.

The first quarter moon is Monday, July 3rd.

Independence Day celebrations include: July 3rd - Onamia (food, beer garden, street dance, fireworks), Izaty's (Fireworks, magic show, kids activities). July 4th - Hillman (parade, food, beer garden, craft/flea mkt), McGrath (pancake breakfast, parade, church dinners, street dance and fireworks), Wahkon (fireworks), Garrison (fireworks). Our advice: After a day in town, get a couple dozen leeches, head out to your favorite reef, throw out the bobbers and enjoy the show. You might even be interrupted by a few of those pesky walleye!

Finally, An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two elderly gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant, and it was really great. I really recommend it." The other man said, "What's the name of the restaurant?" The first man knits his brow in obvious concentration and finally says to his companion, "Ah, what is the name of that red flower you give to someone you love?" His friend replies, "A Carnation? "No. No. The other one," the man says. His friend offers another suggestion, "The Poppy?" "No," growls the man, "You know the one that is red and has thorns." His friend says, "Do you mean a rose?" "Yes, yes that's it," the first man says. He then turns toward the kitchen and yells, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?

Have a great weekend,
