Weekend Outlook

7-13-2006

Hi

Mixed reports have come in throughout the week on Mille Lacs - angling pressure has dropped dramatically from where it was over the past few weeks, although the bite on the mud flats remains good. The gravel and rock reefs have slowed somewhat from the late June frenzy, but remain above what we usually see in mid-July. Overall, spinners tipped with crawlers or rainbows are turning most of the fish. Leeches are good too - during the day, use them on a long line rig or with a floater... toward evening, put 'em on a slip bobber. The Boot, Blue Jug and 8-Mile Flat are all worth a look. Smallmouth action is improving - stay shallow (3-7 feet) and throw tube baits or leech/slip bobber rigs. The northern/muskie action has been inconsistent, but will typically kick in when we get a stretch of hot days like this - bucktails or large sucker minnows are the ticket here.

On July 15th, the protected slot on Mille Lacs is scheduled to change to "... release immediately all walleye 22.0 inches through 28 inches." There has been speculation by a lot of "arm-chair biologists" contrary to this - our advice is to go with the official version rather than what a buddy heard on the internet (unless he ALSO heard 22-28 release)! The limit will remain at 4 fish. Measure carefully!

Yes, we still have big leeches!

The weather for the weekend (from the National Weather Service) looks like this:

Friday: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 93. North northwest wind between 3 and 7 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 70. Calm wind becoming east southeast around 5 mph.

Saturday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Breezy, with a calm wind becoming south between 17 and 20 mph.

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy and breezy, with a low around 67.

Sunday: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 93.

The last quarter moon is Monday, 7-17-06.
