The
Weekend Outlook
7-21-2006
Hi
Hot temperatures kept many Millle Lacs anglers off the lake over the past week or so. Those who went out found the bite rather inconsistent - some days were great, others slow. Look for this "hit-or-miss" pattern to continue over the next few weeks until the temperatures flatten out and the daylight becomes shorter. For now, stick to the mudflats in 23-32 feet of water during the daytime with spinners and crawlers (or rainbows). Leeches work better for the evening bite under a bobber. Some of the better spots this week include 2-mile, Hennepin Island, Otto's Reef, Rocky Reef and Sherman's Flat. There's been some decent smallie action along the reefs on the south end this week - fish Skitter Pops or tube craws in 3-7 feet for your best chance at the new state record (which, by the way, IS in Mille Lacs!). Muskie action has started heating up - Vineland, Wahkon and the north end have each given up some big fish this week. Bucher Tails, Swim Whiz, Awakers and Bulldogs are some of the Mille Lacs favorites.
Release time becomes critical in this heat - The two main causes of "release mortality" are hook removal (digging out that precious 25 cent hook) and time out of water (time spent finding the camera, taking several photos, perhaps dropping the fish on the deck a time or two, finding the measuring tape...). These fish don't revive as quickly as they did in the cooler spirngtime temperatures - we can ALL do our part by handling the fish as little and as quickly as possible.
Remember, the Mille Lacs walleye slot has "loosened" to a 22-28 RELEASE slot. This means you can harvest 4 walleye UNDER 22 inches, or 3 UNDER 22 and 1 OVER 28 inches.
The weather for the weekend (from the National Weather Service) looks like this:
Today: Partly cloudy, with a high near 79. North northwest wind between 6 and 8 mph.
Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 57. North northwest wind between 3 and 6 mph.
Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a high near 81. North northwest wind between 3 and 6 mph.
Saturday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 57. North northwest wind between 3 and 5 mph.
Sunday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 88. Southeast wind at 8 mph becoming southwest.
The new moon is Tuesday, 7-25-06.
