I'd like to spend a day now and then aboard a Lake Erie charter for walleye and/or smallmouth bass, but being a semi-retired self-employed writer (the most lonesome profession, ya know!), I don't have four or five fishing buddies to join a charter with me, and nearly all the Erie captains don't allow drop-in fishermen to join scheduled charters.

If someone needs one or two fishermen (the second being my sweet-natured 13-year-old grandson) to fill out a charter, please let me know. I can travel the two hours to Port Clinton from my home in Elkhart, Indiana, almost anytime.

Or, if there are any single fishermen (or two-man teams) out there who are interested in organizing a charter out of the Port Clinton area, let me know.

Captain Rick Millette, who runs charters out of Toledo and the Port Clinton area (Erie Quest), contacted me after seeing this posting and invited my grandson and me to join him Saturday to fill out a partially full charter that included a couple and their teenage daughter.

Lucky us!

Rick proved to be a very knowledgable and experienced captain and put us on the fish right away. The five of us limited out on walleyes before noon. The two kids caught most of the fish and had a delightful time.

I'd recommend Rick to anyone and plan to join him again at my first opportunity.

Thanks for the heads-up. Since the original posting, I've taken two Lake Erie charters. The first, as already mentioned, was a great experience. The second was a day of bad experiences with a rude, unethical guide from Coe-Vanna Charters. Coe-Vanna seemed to set out to ruin our experience, beginning with an attempt at illegal bait-and-switch. I'll post more about this later because I'm currently involved in filing legal complaints with the local sheriff's office, the Better Business Bureau and the Ohio state attorney general's office. For now, I'd advise everyone to avoid this charter company like the plague!

I can't get away for the outing you mentioned, but I appreciate your offer.

My grandson and I have scheduled a two-day Lake Erie trip to Pelee Island with Capt. Rick Millette -- going after smallmouth bass.

I run a charter in the Western Basin of Lake Erie. Get ahold of me if you are still interested in a trip and we can work something out. I am a teacher and only charter on during the summer and on weekends during the school year. I will work with kids to help them catch fish.
