I'm planning to take a week long trip to either South Dakota or North Dakota for a week of Walleye, Smallie and even Pike fishing next Spring or early Summer. I have a Ranger Reata 1850 that I plan to bring.

Does anyone have some suggestions that meet the following criteria:

1) Good Walleye and Pike fishing
2) Good Smallie fishing is a bonus
3) Not required to fish real deep or big open water
4) No planer board or lead line walleye fishing
5) Has motel/resort that you can stay by the lake and slip for the boat.
6) Big enough lake to keep you busy for 5-6 days of fishing.
7) Somewhat similiar experience to fishing in Canada

Early June on Devils Lake will provide phenominal walleye fishing by bobbers and pitching crank baits. It also has great white bass and pike fishing. The lake is big enough that it would take two weeks to explore the whoile lake. Spirit Lake Casino offers a marina where you can leave your boat over night and also has a nice hotel and camp sites.

I would go to either Lake Sharpe or the Glacial Lakes in SD, base yourself at Roy Lake. Both areas provide an excellent combo of smallie and walleye fishing.

There are a few places to stay around Lake Sharpe. I know you said you would like a resort area, and a loft for your boat, but I would still have to let you know abour the Chamberlain/Platte area. June is a great time to fish there, 40-50 fish days are not uncommon. And beautiful land by the river.

Another vote for Devils Lake. Varied tactics, lots of pike, white bass, and walleyes. Great resort on Creel Bay to stay at with great bait shop, slips, restaraunt, and cabins/motel units. Plenty to stay busy for a week. Always find out of the wind places to fish on the nastiest days.

Fished Oahe, Pierre, Chamberland and Devils Lake this year. If you get to Devils Lake early enough in the year (before the fish move out of the spawning areas) Devils Lake is the place to go. Easy to catch on Bobbers, pitching cranks, trolling or jigging, whatever suits you best. Pelican Lake is where the fish are in the spring, chamber number 1-800-223-8048. Casino, nice, no drinking even in your room 800-946-8238. We stayed at the BlueBell Cabin, on hwy 2 East of town 3 minutes, GREAT beautiful on water place. 800-562-1315 Woodland Resort, has own launch and bait, may have to trailer to Pelican. 701-662-7280. Hope I helped, good luck!

I have never had very good luck in ealry May during the spawn and just after. Not sure what you are talking about but I have experienced the best fishing in late May to early July. This is well after the spawn. The fish are in the shallow waters.
