Weekend Outlook

8-4-2006

Hi

We finally saw some relief from the heat this week - stable 80 degree days were a welcome sight from the 90+++ days last week! Angling pressure on Mille Lacs remains unusually light. The bite has slowed from where we saw it a month ago, but it's no slower (I think it's noticably better) than what we usually see during the first week of August. More folks will turn toward evening/night bobber fishing this time of year - set up in deeper (20-28 feet) water with a slip bobber, glow jig and a leech (yes, we still have leeches) and wait 'em out. It's not "hot and heavy", but it's an effective way to get a few fish for the table. We haven't noticed a preference for daytime presentation - crawlers/spinners, rainbow/spinners, leech/rig, leech/slip bobber, deep crankbaits have all turned fish so far this week. The mud flats have been somewhat better than the gravel. Smallmouth action remains good in 4-7 feet... throw tube craws or "Senco-style" plastics. The muskies have rewarded some lucky Mille Lacs anglers and frustrated many others - finding/seeing fish has been pretty common, but puttin' the hooks into 'em is a whole different story. Northern fishing was spotty this week, with most of the active fish taking large sucker minnows.

Yes, we still have big leeches!

The water level on Mille Lacs is significantly lower than it was at the start of the season. Use caution when you come upon the hazzard buoys... there's some "prop-eaters" just underneath!

The weather for the weekend (from the National Weather Service) looks like this:

Finally, Ole drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he floored it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down I-75, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw the highway patrol behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this," and pulled over to await the Trooper's arrival. Pulling in behind him, the Trooper walked up to the Corvette, looked at his watch and said, "Ole, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a reason for speeding that I've never heard before, I'll let you go." Ole paused. Then said, "Years ago, Lena ran off with a State Trooper. I thought maybe you were bringing her back!" "Have a good day, Ole," replied the Trooper.

Have a great weekend,
