Hi

The walleye bite has been scattered all over the lake so far this week - decent reports are rolling in using several different approaches. The deep crankbait is still alive during the daytime... fish the 32-36 foot water adjacent to the mudflats with deep diving baits or a suitable alternative (snap weights, lead core, downriggers, etc.). The mid-depth (15-20 feet) rock/bobber /leech bite has been good on the calm days. The shallow (6-10 feet) rock/bobber/leech bite has been excellent on the windy days. This same approach has been good in the evenings too. Some folks have been trolling crankbaits in the shallow water at/after dark with some success. In a nutshell, the mobile, versitile walleye angler will find some fish. I don't think this is a "one approach" weekend - remember, "wet baits catch fish". Muskie action is steady, with most of the fish still coming from the cabbage with bucktails and chatterbaits. As the temperature drops, watch for many of these fish to move to some of the shallower rock reefs. Perch action is improving... Vineland and Isle bay are still your best bet.

Yes, we still have big leeches!

This (September full moon phase) is often when people who have read an article or some internet dribble about "Fall Night Fishing" come to Mille Lacs expecting to fish one reef, one crankbait for one night out of the year and catch a bazillion walleye just because "it's the full moon"... good luck! We've seen some great full moon phases and some real dogs - factor in components like water temperature, forage availability, water clarity, clear or overcast, windy or flat, stickbait or shad body, color/size... I could go on. Combine these with your knowledge of the lake, boat control, presentation and fishing saavy and you can see that there are a lot more factors to fall fishing than just a hollow circle on the calendar. Run your cranks, but remember to hit a few reefs, try a few colors, switch-up the body styles, try deeper or shallower and fish every chance you get.

Finally, A highway patrolman pulled alongside a speeding car on the freeway. Glancing at the car, he was astounded to see that the blonde behind the wheel was knitting! Realizing that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren, the trooper cranked down his window, turned on his bullhorn and yelled, "PULL OVER!" "NO!" the blonde yelled back, "IT'S A SCARF!"

Have a great weekend,
