When you buy a new spinning reel, there is usually a spare spool included. Do you use the spare spool.
Thanks.

I never use it. I give them to a buddy that has his own panfish tip-up design and he uses them.

You can wind the spare spool with a different pound test line for a quick change on the water.

Most of my spinning reels (Shimano) have come with a spare spool. I generally run Fireline on all these rigs, but do have a couple of the spare spools loaded up with mono for those early spring / late fall trips where we troll in very shallow water and I want something that doesn't go down quite as easily. Other than that, they generally sit in the glove box of the boat.
Same as everyone else. Think I wil but dont.
I guess when we are comparing prices and reels it doesn't matter what kind of spare reel comes with it. Some come with aluminum and others graphite.

I am actually kind of surprised by all of the previous replies. The use of a spare spool depends on what the rod is being used for. I definitely fill both spools on all of my jig rods. I put Hi-Viz PowerPro on one spool for vertical jigging and Hi-Viz mono on the other for casting jigs. My personal experience/belief is that the braid lets the jig drop faster and has more sensitivity, desirable for vert. jigging and the mono falls slower, allowing the jig to glide more. I used to run all PowerPro on everything for everything. Once I switched to mono in casting situations, especially on river wing dams and also light jigs with live bait in lake situations, I flat out started catching more fish. The braid line allowed the jig to drop too fast. On my slip bobber rods I also run both spools. If I am pitching bobber rigs into timber, I use a spool filled with braid and a floro leader. If I am using the bobber to place or work bait on certain underwater structure, I use a spool filled with strait mono. My rig rods are the only ones that I never change the spool on.
Just my observation,
Brian

In most instances you only use ~ the first 1/3 of the line in a spool. So when my line starts to get a little old I re-spool it onto the spare spool and in essence end up with a fresh spool of line for $.00
Call me cheap but it works and the only fish that ever spooled me was a huge salmon but that was on 8lb test line and I think she was foul hooked to boot.

Yep, I always carry spare spools on every trip. I try and spool extra spools with different pound test to to make my gear a bit more versital. Besides that you never know when you are going to get one of those nasty wind knots that make a mess out of the spool and its easy to change the spool compared to fighting with the knot.

Yep, I use one with mono and one with fireline.
Easy to switch depending were I am fishing.

Me and bro and Dad use (usually) same type and size of reels, so we have a box with bunch of spares. Many different sizes and line types, and we just snap them on depending upon what type of fishing we are doing. Also for when gets "messed up" for some reason.
Also, we use one or two for our "leader material" holders. Just peel some off the "spare" spool and then use the little tab to lock the tag end back, and it is better holder than the big plastic spools for the store. Works well.
I have now switched to different brand reel, but still have two of these, so 4 total spools. All have different line on them, and I have switched them around depending on need already. Spring I use lighter smaller line, fall is heavier for those fish who are on a binge :)

After reading the other posts I realized why I do not carry spare spools. I purchased extra combos instead. I just pick up a new one rather than finding my box, switching the spool and re tying.
