The team of Terry Green from Mason City and Steve Templeton from Clear Lake used their first place finish at the I.O.W.A. Walleye Tournament trail's Spirit Lake Motor Inn Qualifier on Sunday, September 17 to propel them to the top in the race for the Humminbird Team of the Year honors.
Green and Templeton weighed a 5-fish limit weight of 5.90 pounds to not only win the $2000 first place check, but to also claim the Humminbird Team of the Year title with 29 points. They outdistanced the team of Greg Lowenberg and Dale Frederick from Fairfield, who finished the year with 32 points.
"This was the second qualifier where we had one of our sponsors provide a $500 bonus check for the winners. Thanks to Motor Inn for stepping up to provide an extra $500 to the first place purse," said I.O.W.A. Executive Director Dean Higgins.
The second place team of Mike Odor from Lakeville, MN and Gordy Odor from Dakota City weighed a 5-fish limit weight of 5.65 pounds, earning a check of $870. They also won the Berkley Family Team Award of a pair of rod and reel combos valued at $100 each.
Meanwhile, the team of Jeff Thomas from Alburnett and Craig Kerslake from Marion took third place and a check for $620 with their 5-fish limit weight of 5.36 pounds.
The team of Bruce Sparks from Des Moines and Jesse Roush from Clive took home the Cabela's Big Fish award of a $100 certificate for their 1.58-pound walleye, along with the $270 optional Big Fish Pot. They also took the TowTector Shield award of two $75 certificates for the team just finishing out of the money with their 9th place finish.
The Stow Master Award of $200 for being the highest placing team using a Stow Master net went to the team of Denny Miller from Fairfax and Rodger Clark from Albert Lea, MN with a 7th place finish.
The Need Mack's Lure Award of $200 went to the team of Frank Wood from Mason City and Lance Thoe from Clear Lake.
Another award was given out to the team that finished as the highest placing family team for the year. This special Family Team Award of two Minnkota Maxxum 80 Pro bow mount trolling motors went to the team of Joe and Kathy Kirk from Urbandale.
"We had quite a weather change from the previous two days," noted Higgins referring to Sunday's qualifier. "We went from strong south winds and temperatures in the 80s to a west wind at 30 to 40 mph and temperatures in the low 60s. But just like always, the top teams figured out what it would take to get the fish to bite."
The top three teams all focused on the same strategy and as Green said on stage, "Get the lead out!" That is exactly what the top teams did as they trolled the main basin with crankbaits and lead core line. With the high winds, the winners felt it was a waste of time to try to troll into the waves, so they trolled with the wind at 2.5-3.0 mph. They found blue #5 RS Shad Raps to be the key crankbait.
The second place team pulled chartreuse #5 Shad Raps at 2.80-3.0 mph, while the third place team trolled firetiger #4 Shad Raps at 1.7 mph.
Higgins reflected on the success of Green and Templeton. "They have been so consistent all year. They came in with the goal of winning the Humminbird Team of the Year honors and put on quite a show. It was a close race all year. Lowenberg and Frederick ended up in 6th place today, but they were less than a pound out of first place." Green and Templeton won two Humminbird 937-C color graph/sonars.
Next up will be I.O.W.A. Hooters State Championship on October 14-15 on the Mississippi River at Davenport.
