Hi
Warm temperatures and sturdy winds over the past 3 days have reduced the snow cover on Mille Lacs to nearly nothing - snowmobiles are not a good choice for transportation at this point. As the weather warms, be careful around the pressure breaks... some movement has already started with this last warm-up. The overall travel is good with up to 30 inches of ice remaining on Mille Lacs.
The bite has been hit-or-miss again this week - some "rogue" walleye continue to show up at first and last light, but the bite is certainly slower than what we saw just a few weeks ago. The edges of the mud flats (Sherman's, 9-mile, 7-mile) have been the most consistent. Small shiners on a set line or tip-up have turned most of the fish although the jig bite is certainly worth a look. Slender Spoons and Angel Eyes (thinner, lighter and they drop slower) tipped with a fathead or a piece of a fathead have been the most productive spoons for walleye. The perch bite has remained much the same over the past 3 weeks - lots of sorting, but if you put your time in you should be able to go home with a few meals. It's important to keep the presentation somewhat smaller than usual... small Demons or Gem-n-Eyes tipped with a whole crappie minnow or several Eurolarva is the ticket. The northern pike went berserk on Sunday - we weighed more big northern Sunday than we have for the rest of the season (so far) combined! Shiners have been the ticket for the big pike in 9-12 feet of water.
The last day for walleye and northern is Sunday, February 25th. Ice houses need to be removed from Mille Lacs no later than midnight on February 28th. (page 59) Beginning March 1st, portables may be used from one hour before sunrise to midnight. Also, all 2007 fish and game licenses (and shelter licenses) are due March 1. The 07 licenses are scheduled to go on sale February 18th, but do not become valid until March 1.
